Visits to the beach spark a number of feelings in most people. From basking in the sun, sailing across the waves, or simply planting your bum in the sand and gazing out over the vast expanse of the ocean, beaches offer a multitude of ways to relax and enjoy.
For many travelers visiting beaches and towns, one of the highlights of those trips is feasting on fresh and locally caught seafood. Scallops, oysters, fish, and lobster are just a few of the ocean delicacies that you might dream of when you’re thinking about your next beach adventure.
Me? No.
Don’t get me wrong; I like fish. But I like steak much, much more. I’m the girl that pushes aside the claw crackers and tartar sauce and grabs a steak knife and the compound butter instead.
Sometimes when I travel to seaside destinations finding a great steak in amongst the abundant seafood can be difficult. However, in a beautiful village like La Jolla, just north of San Diego and perched on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, a great steak is easy to find.
These are just a few of the best steakhouses in La Jolla.
Donovan’s Steak and Chophouse
Prime cuts and that dark, moody atmosphere that always means you’re in for a red meat treat combine to make Donovan’s arguably the best place in La Jolla for a steak. Consistently at the top of the Zagat ratings, Donovan’s prides itself on its refined yet comfortable service, a truly impressive wine list, and all of the classic sides that I love to see sitting next to my steak.
But the steaks are truly the star of the show here. Do yourself a favor and order the 10 ounce filet cooked medium rare. Juicy and butter knife tender, this steak just might surpass anything that you’ve ever put in your mouth, and it’s much, much better than fish could ever hope to be.
And if you stay at the nearby San Diego Marriott La Jolla you won’t have far to go when it’s food coma time.
Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse
With locations across the country Fleming’s is categorized as a chain in my book, but that doesn’t mean they don’t serve a fantastic steak. This location, just across from the lovely Hyatt Regency La Jolla, stays true to the company’s mission of serving amazing cuts of beef with great service and a drool-worthy list of over 100 wines by the glass.
While I’ll always be partial to the incredible filet mignon, their wagyu New York strip is about as good as beef can get. Pair that with a big, bold glass of one of their curated wines and a signature side such as the chipotle mac and cheese or the spicy Thai green beans and you will find yourself floating on a carnivore cloud in foodie heaven.
Sure, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with dining on fish when you’re near the ocean, but while you’re doing that, I’ll be over at the steakhouse, wine in hand and knife at the ready, poised for yet another epic adventure in amazing steak, or a delicious burger at Mustangs and Burros at Estancia La Jolla Hotel and Spa.
Hey, beef is beef.
